A detailed nutritional assessment involves a review of current or preferred dietary patterns. It involves knowledge of travel plans, occupation and hours of activity and exercise plans. Knowledge of food quantities will be discussed and an open discussion of ideal and preferred food groups will allow some baseline nutritional knowledge to evolve. Also as drinking patterns influence diabetes treatment the amounts of consumed water, fruit juice, fizzy drinks or alcohol will need to be documented. The point is not to judge these habits but to advise on best practice using up to date clinical trials data. This session will conclude with review of current news stories, misconceptions and myths about diabetes and food. There will also be an opportunity to review the currently available clinical data on the use of vitamin and mineral supplements.
