Unhealthy Heart

Many of the early ideas about putting Type 2 diabetes into remission were generated from lifestyle intervention data. These studies essentially showed that weight loss and exercise could reverse diabetes in some patients. The problem was that many patients then re-presented later with a relapse of their condition, a point that highlights the concept of remission rather than cure.

More recently the hot topic is bariatric surgery. High remission rates of approximately 80% have been published after gastric weight loss procedures. Again the concept of remission has been reinforced as long-term data suggests that a reasonably large number of patients will eventually relapse with a representation of diabetes.
