Calcium is very good for bone health. In the very specific group of people needing a supplement in order to treat osteoporosis, Calcium together with Vitamin D has proven value. Also not every study on Calcium and the heart has shown a negative outcome, there are some studies with neutral or positive outcomes.
The main concern about the worry of calcium side effects has to be for those people needing osteoporosis management. Currently the argument remains on the side of continuing to prescribe calcium/vitamin D. The recommended daily intake of Calcium for osteoporosis prevention is about 1000-1200mg daily. For everyone else there is no reason to take Calcium supplements although there is still a very good argument to continue to take vitamin D for bone health.
